Full of medieval architecture, the fort houses a number of historic buildings including Man Mandir, Gujari Mahal cum museum, Teli-ka-Mandir Temple, and many others. It is one of the biggest forts in India and historical records state that it was built in the 8th century. Known as ‘The Pearl in the Necklace of the Forts of Hind’ by the Mughal Emperor Babur, the fort attracts thousands of tourists every year. Evening at the Man Mandir Palace of Gwalior Fort gives you a glimpse into its glorious past. The story of this 'pearl' begins with the sonorous and eloquent narration by Amitabh Bachchan as Gopachal, the sutradhar (narrator). After the visit return to your hotel. Overnight at Gwalior.
Day 2 : Gwalior (Excursion to Morena)
Morning after breakfast enjoy your excursion to Mitawoli Temple, Garhi Padawali & The Bateswara Group of temples. MITAOLI is a village where the popular Chausath Yogini Temple lies - The temple is perched atop a hill surrounded by lush greenery. A climb of approximately 100 steps will take you to the beauty of this splendid round temple. The striking views will have you reaching for your camera too! The Parliament House in New Delhi is believed to have been inspired by the circular design and architectural intricacies of the Mitawali temple! It is also said that Mitawali, Padavali, and Bateshwar made a golden triangle in which a university existed about 1000 years ago! The alleged teaching center was said to be a hub to impart education in Mathematics, Astrology, and Hinduism to the children with the help of sun rays! PADAVALI: The notable Padavali fortress was built in the 18th century by the Jat Ranas rulers of Dhaulpur. Graciously guarded by a lion and lioness, the fort also has a temple that once served as a divine place to worship Lord Shiva. Every stone used in the fortification and in the making of the temple has something to convey about the ancient era through its inscription and detailing! BATESHWAR: The site is not just about one temple; the Bateshwar temples are a cluster of almost 200 mini grandeurs made of sandstone, devoted to lords Shiva and Vishnu. Spread over 25 acres, these shrines were built across slanted hills near Padavali. The temples were constructed in the 8th to 10th century AD probably during the Gurjara-Pratihara Dynasty. Interestingly, the jungle nearby is full of beautiful birds like peacocks, parakeets and kingfishers. The site remained inaccessible for public being a hide out for the dacoits, until recently. With the taking over of the sacred place by Archaeological Survey of India, in 1988 the place again received attention after lying dormant for more than eight hundred years. However, it was not always so, as Bateshwara was a cultural oasis of eminence that provided nourishment and continuity to temple architecture for well over 300 years. Here, it remains a mystery that how this enclave stood its ground for so many years? Perhaps it was as culmination of resurgent aspirations of the people in the post-Gupta times, which incidentally enabled the passing on of vibrant traditions of temple architecture. After visits drive back to Gwalior & In the afternoon proceed to visit Jai Vilas Palace: Jai Vilas Palace is well-known around the country for its beautiful architecture is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Gwalior, It is particularly famous for its large Durbar Hall, beautifully furnished with superb chandeliers, gilt and gold furnishings and a huge carpet. The chandeliers and the gold leaves in the hall which is believed to be the heaviest in Asia. The museum has neo neo-classical room, a Napoleon table room crystal furniture room, a Kerman Masha’ir carpet room, and an Oriental art room. There is a huge dining table with a silver train is a highlight. This mini train is a table trolley that rotates itself on the table in front of diners so that they can pick up food. Also visit the Tomb of Ghaus Mohammad & Tansen: The city’s most famous Muslim building is the sixteenth-century Tomb of Ghaus Mohammed, an Afghan prince who helped Babur take Gwalior fort. It’s a fine specimen of early Mughal architecture and a popular local shrine. Elegant hexagonal pavilions stand at each of its four corners; in the centre, the large central dome retains a few remnants of its blue-glazed tiles. The tomb’s walls are inlaid with exquisite pierced-stone jali screens. The second and smaller of the tombs in the gardens is that of the famous Mughal singer-musician Tansen, one of the “Nine Jewels” of Emperor Akbar’s court. After the visit return to the hotel & Overnight at Gwalior
Day 3 : Gwalior ? Sonagiri ? Datia ? Orchha by road (130 kms & 3 Hours approx.)
The morning after breakfast check out from the hotel and drive to Orchha, en route visiting Sonagiri Jain Temples & Datia Palace. Jain Temples of Sonagir: Located 15 km from Datia, one comes across low hills with rows of sparking white marble-clad temples on the slopes. This is the famous Jain pilgrimage of Sonagir (literally the Golden Mountain). There are 77 Jain temples, built in rows on the hill and its slopes, and date back to the 17th century. Of these, the temple dedicated to Chandranatha, the 8th of the 24 Tirthankaras, is quite a large one and the most beautiful. A large annual fair is held here in the month of Chaitra (April) Bir Singh Palace: Bir Singh Palace is a most impressive monument, its great bulk surmounted by the elegant group of domes providing a gratifying spectacle from every aspect. The Bundela king Raja Bir Singh Deo, apparently not satisfied by the majestic Jehangir Mahal Palace, he had built at his capital in Orchha, went on, in 1620, to build a palace of such a distinctive character as to stand in a class by itself on a rocky mount in Datia 43 km away. Historians and architects consider it to be one of the finest representations of Bundela architecture. An imposing structure, Bir Singh Palace sits like a diadem on a hill lock, draped in beautiful pink bougainvillea. Standing 40 m high, its effect as an architectural entity is grand. The symmetrical structure of the palace is influenced by the Mughal architectural style. At the same time, the plan resembles the Swastika, one of the holiest symbols of Hinduism. This syncretism made it a favourite of Sir Edwin Lutyens, the English architect and planner, who designed most of British New Delhi. The Palace has a profusion of arches, chhatris, ornamental Jaali screens, balconies, and oriel windows which open to delightful views. After the visit drive to Orchha. Arrive at Orchha check in at the hotel & proceed to visit evening if times allow enjoy the aarti ceremony at Ram Raja temple. In India, this is the only temple where Lord Rama is worshiped as a king, and that too in a palace. The Aarti is as grand as the temple itself. A Guard of Honour is held everyday evening, police personnel have been designated as Guards at the temple, much in the manner of a king, and the offerings of Lord Ram are also provided as a royal feast. It is one of the best ceremonial sights to behold. After the visit return to your hotel & Overnight at Orchha.
